Fools Gold

When school was over, we all hurried to get out. Two of my friends were coming over, and we were going on a walk in the forest behind my house. Kip, Liz, and I got all of our pocketknives, flashlights, and food so we could head out. My guide dog, Peanut, wanted to go with us and he followed us over the hill. There were many hills, it seemed as though they never ended. As we got over the last one, there was the forest where we were headed. We went through the tall grass and thorns to the bottom of the hill and there flowed a river winding through the earth. We had never seen it before and we followed it through the forest. There were trees down and we walked over them as we crossed the water. All of a sudden everything got quiet. There were no noises and a hidden door appeared in the side of a rock wall. There was no choice, but to go in and explore. That is what we had dreamed of happening and now was our chance to explore it. As we opened the thick, rock, door and walked in, it got cool and the air felt damp. I heard flowing water not too far away from us. We slowly started walking further in and all of a sudden we were at the side of a drop off. Down below there was a very long, river that seemed as though it went on for miles. The water was as clear as the air and we could see gold glittering on the bottom and sides of the river. We wanted that gold because we could be so rich with it. My friends and I walked around, trying to find a way to get down to the water. There was a wooden staircase that led down to the bottom of the canyon. We slowly walked down the stairs, being careful of what was happening. Nothing happened until we got to the bottom step and Kip fell on the wet stair into the cool water. He had broken his leg during the fall and we could not get him up the stairs. We wanted to take the gold, but if we took the gold it would be way to heavy to take Kip with us. Kip was bleeding and we needed help fast. Liz and I didn’t know how to go back to the house fast enough to get help. Before we could make a plan, Peanut took off towards home. I knew what he was doing. He had been trained to get help and bring the people to an injured person. One of us sat by Kip and waited for the rescue to come while the other one collected the gold from the water. Within fifteen minutes, there was a group of people that came and got everyone out of the water. We all went to my house, and looked at our gold. When my mom saw the gold, she told us it was fools gold. Kip was all right, and a few days later we went back to the sight. The door had been hidden again so we could not get in. We were disappointed but we will continue to go back and search for the hidden door. Peanut always goes with us now.
