Multimedia embraces new technology

By: Marla M

As a student in this year’s multimedia class, we plan the yearbook, write newspaper articles, and produce Valley programs, among many other duties. With the advances and growing knowledge of technology we are now expanding our curriculum by producing podcasts.

Some are probably wondering what exactly a podcast is? A podcast is a series of audio or video digital-media files which are distributed over the Internet by syndicated download, through Web feeds, to portable media players and personal computers. “Podcast” is a combination of the words “iPod” and “broadcast”. The apple iPod portable media player developed the first podcasting scripts.

Podcasting is becoming increasingly popular in education. Podcasts enable students and teachers to share information with anyone at any time. It can be a great tool for teachers or administrators to communicate curriculum, assignments, and other information, not only with students, but with parents and the community.

Earlier this year, Jeff Bradley, from the Elgin Echo, contacted Valleys multimedia class wondering if we wanted to try some podcasts for the papers new web site. We decided to take up the challenge and were excited to try something new.

Each week, two people in the class get a chance to experiment with the podcast and report about school topics. Mrs. Lezley Johanson, Valley’s media specialist, has offered to help us in getting familiar with the podcasting equipment and procedure.  Last week, I recorded my first podcast. I do admit it was much easier than I thought it would ever be. It seemed like magic with just one push of a button (record, stop record), and a few other simple steps along the way, I had my first podcast.

The first step was coming up with a school topic to report on. My partner and I chose to research the new horticulture lab being built at Valley. With the use of the school’s Ipod and an attachable recorder we were able interview Mr. Ryan Bergan, Valley’s industrial tech. teacher, and Mrs. Monica Enyart, Valley’s ag. science teacher, about the project. We then uploaded our podcast, and edited it, and added pictures and music.

The final project is posted on the new website at www.newspapersoffayettecounty.com. If you get the chance, visit the site and listen to the latest news from the Valley.  Valley’s multimedia class has three podcasts posted so far and is working on the fourth one this week. It has been a learning experience working with the new technology, and I’m looking forward to producing another podcast in a few weeks.
