Feeding Calves

I hear the calves bellering

Waiting to be fed

I look over

And see all the calves standing by the fence

Then I see the empty bunks

That have been licked clean

I can taste the dust from the feed

As I fill the pails

I feel the weight of the pails on my arms

As I feed them

I hear the calves running for the bunk

The calves push past me

Trying to get to the bunk

I listen to the sound of the highway

That sits next to our house

I can smell the manure that sits outside the shed

And the smell of the fresh cut bale of hay
