Running Away

By: Mariah. C

We were running through the woods ducking and dodging branches here and there, panting roughly. We had scratches all over our bodies from falling on rocks and running through bushes. We came to a stop to catch our breathes when we heard a branch on the woods floor snap to our right, we snapped our attention to the general direction to where we heard it snap and went silent. We stopped breathing and were just silent.

The wind was blowing gently in the night and it made chills go down my spine. I scooted a bit closer to my brother feeling a bit better but not a whole lot. The moon was partially covered by clouds and owl’s hooted off in the distance. I was starting to feel light headed and gasped for air but ended up gasping when my brother clamped his hand over my mouth and pointed off into the dark part of the woods where you could just faintly see a shadow move silently and swiftly towards us.

I knew who it was the minute I saw the gold and red glowing eyes and ran towards them tackling whoever the eyes belonged to and gave them a big hug. You could here the wind get knocked out of the person and chuckle softly.

“What took you so long? We waited but you never came so we had to leave. I was so worried. Don’t you ever hold out on us like that ever again you big butthead.” I rambled out endlessly running out of breath once again. Eventually my brother had to pull me off of the person so the person himself could catch his breathe from my viper like hug.

“They were following me and I couldn’t let myself lead them to you and end up having them catch the both of you. I wouldn’t allow it to happen.” The person stated with distinguished pride in his voice.

“Of course you wouldn’t have Aspen.” My brother Aiden said helping Aspen up from the wooded floor dusting him off.

“It sure did take a lot of work catching up to you two. If you hadn’t of stopped I’d still be running after you. You two are very, very fast and strong to be able to run for 37 miles without stopping. I myself had to stop at least 13 times to catch my breath, and being talked by Talia didn’t help my situation at all.” Aspen stated joking around with me while pushing my shoulder lightly. I blushed and muttered an audible sorry looking down and turning even redder when they both started laughing at me.

I looked up at them and just stare at the two most important people in my life. Two of my closest friends in the whole wide universe, but there was someone missing. “Where’s Kiati?” I asked missing her. They both looked at me with white faces and turned when they heard the running of paws. I turned and as soon as I dig I went down on my back with something licking my face.

“Didn’t think you could get rid of me that easily now do you?” I laughed and shook my head at my third most important person in the world to me.

“How did you find us?” I asked through our mind link, which is like talking through a phone to a certain person except with out talking and using just your mind.

“I crawled through that horribly small doggy door in the kitchen and fallowed your scent, but don’t worry I covered all three of your scents and brought some stuff I thought you might like to have.” Kiati informed getting off of me and going by a tree and pulling out a large duffel bag bulging from all the stuff she stuffed in there.

“What all did you put in there and how did you put it in there. You don’t have fingers.” I stated obviously wondering how she did it, because I mean she’s a wolf and can’t shape shift into a human. She’s just a normal wolf who I found one day out in the woods and brought her home with me and we’ve been together ever since and that was about 4 ½ years ago.

“I had Jake pack it for me.” Kiati said. Jake was another friend of mine but he doesn’t know what’s happening with my brother, Aspen, and I. So there for I wouldn’t allow him to get in the middle of this and possibly get hurt. I nodded my head and walked over to the bag and un-zipped it since Kiati couldn’t.

“I grabbed you your picture of you mom that you kept on your nightstand, your IPod, some clothes you might need since I’m pretty sure you didn’t take any time and just threw stuff in the bag you and your brother are sharing, your big black water bottle since it gets really hot in the afternoon, and your hairbrush and toothbrush and toothpaste because I noticed that you didn’t grab them and I thought to myself that your going to regret it that you forgot them and woke up with stinky breath and knotted hair. Oh and I grabbed your headphones and ear buds so that you can listen to your music.” Kiati stated through the mind link.

I jumped up and gave Kiati a big bear hug or should I say wolf hug since I am a werewolf and Kiati is a wolf so yeah. Oh I might’ve forgot to mention that I’m a werewolf and their not what your thinking. We don’t just turn on the full moon; we can change whenever we want. We do have short tempers though and it can be difficult to control sometimes. We aren’t bloodthirsty craved animals who can’t control themselves around humans. We can. Those are just rouges. Oh and rouges are werewolves who have either been kicked out of a pack or decided to leave voluntarily. Personally I know why they leave voluntarily if they go through what I went through. At least I’m not alone on this one.

When we start to lose out temper we can sort of give out warning like, 1. Our eyes will switch on and off to our wolves eye color, mine for instance are a very dark gold with swirls of red in them, but my human eyes are a hazel green they like to change with my mood, 2. Our canines will elongate, 3.  Our nails will turn to claws and last but not least 4. We turn into our wolves and are very mad by then so it would be a very good idea for whoever we were mad at to climb a tree or something like that.

I looked up and saw that Aiden and Aspen were looking at me as if they were getting something too. I looked back in the bag and asked if Kiati had Jake pack anything for the guys. She nodded and pulled out four steaks and took them over to the guys. They had grins so big I thought their mouths were going to split and make them look like the joker. I laughed at them and they looked at me wondering what I was laughing at.

“The looks on your faces were priceless when you saw the steaks!” By the time I was done saying that I was rolling on the ground with Kiati having a wolfish smirk on her face.

“Oh well then your going to be laughing harder than what you are right now.” Aspen said with Aiden grinning devilishly obviously knowing what Aspen was talking about and I started getting an idea on what they were talking about when it popped in my head and I jumped up to start running. I could here him close behind me and tried to run faster. I turned to my left sharply and climbed a tree. I stilled my breathing and watched him looking around confused. I held in my giggles and stared down at him in amusement. He eventually walked away and went back to Aiden and Kiati. I sighed and jumped down silently landing on my feet brushing off my clothes from the tree pine needles only to be tackled with my sides being tickled by Aspen. I was laughing so hard that my sides burned and I was gasping for air. I was pleading for him to stop and he just smiled and laughed down at me. Aspen was like another brother to me. Whenever Aiden couldn't be there, Aspen was.

I was rolling side to side with Aspen on me still tickling my sides. I yelped out because I got jabbed in the back by a sharp rock bitting into my skin. I felt warm liquid running down my back and jumped up off the woods floor. I pulled up the back of my shirt to see a gouge in my my back with dirt in it. Aiden ran over to me and grabbed his bottle to clean it out while Aspen ran to go get some bandages. He ran back and pretty much just slapped them on there. "Guys it's no big deal it's just a scratch." I said walking away from them and to the duffel bag to get my Ipod.

"What do you mean no big deal? That could get infected." Aspen said with Aiden nodding his head in agreement. See what did I tell ya. There protective and care a lot. They don't even want me to go running unless I have one of them with me.

"We've been here too long we better get moving." I stated putting the stuff back in the duffel and throwing it up on my shoulder. I started walking away and ran into something. I stumbled backward and stared wide-eyed at the man before me. "Dad." I said that one word so shocked and scared that I fell down. Aiden ran to me and picked me up pulling me behind him. I forgot to mention this but we ran away because mine and Aiden's dad was going to try to kill both me and him because we're special and have unique abilities. Like for one, I can talk to animals, dead people and see the future. Aiden can control the elements and whip fire from his hands like a whip lashing at a horse. Our father had killed our mother and gained her powers. She could control things with her mind and it was useless hiding anything from her. She would already know the minute you said a word.

I turned around to look for Aspen but couldn't find him. I looked back at y father going wide-eyed again because Aspen was standing right beside him with a silver knife in his hands. "What are you doing?" I asked shocked and feeling betrayed. He looked at me with sad eyes but they were soon replaced with cold hard ones. He turned around and slashed my father's throat and walked over to me and Aiden.

"I'm so sorry." He whispered and killed both of us ripping out our throats and watching us falling to the ground. I knew this would happen I just wish I could've prevented it. During my last final moments I saw Kiati lunge at him clawing at him and tried to cry out when he snapped her neck and then cut his own. Dropping to the ground just like the rest of us did. And then.... There was nothing. Nothing but darkness. Like you were floating

in water. Except you weren't. We were all dead and it was for the best. That way no one got hurt anymore, and no one died.

I like how you really put into detail the relationships you had with your friends in the story.

The details in the setting and the "5 senses" are definitely there! It made me feel as if I was in the forest along with them.

I loved the wolf and it took me a while to catch on that she could only talk to other werewolves. This story could be a very good book so keep working on it.

I liked how you had werewolves and an actual wolf in the story being friends. I liked how the character Aspen was as much of a brother to the sister as Aiden was.

I like how even thought the characters were different, they were best friends, and you could tell they had a relationship with each other.

I really enjoyed the storyline, and you used many good similies. I also enjoyed the surprise ending, I wasn't expecting them all to die at Aspen's hand.
