                                                                                               The Great Escape

You know how in the war when POW’s were captured, and they tried all these different ways to escape to get to freedom, and in the end of the war, they were let go?  Well that is how my summer in the big city of D.C. was. Oh, my name is Tyler Douglas. I’m fifteen, and this was what my summer was about...

It all started when my parents got this big idea to leave the country and go to the big cities and see the sights. Well, I’m not the kind of kid to be in an area with a lot of people that all have a lot of problems, and only care about themselves. Yeah sure the sights were nice to see in all, but wide open spaces and straight highways is something I can’t get enough of!
We first saw the Lincoln Memorial, it was fun you could say... there were a lot of people that wanted to be first so I just backed off and let them go. I mean, what is the point of having to stand right under him you can see him from hundreds of feet away. Mom and dad don’t think that though, they have to get right up close to everything. Yeah, then I get in trouble for climbing onto the hotel roof and sitting there for a couple of hours with my laptop trying to talk to my best friends at home. I think it was the fact that I got past the security clearance of the hotel that got everyone mad. I don’t see what the big deal was, jesse I was going to return the guys security card when I was done with it.
After about three days in D.C. I was going crazy. I just wanted to get out of that place, and go some where that was just quite. I was thinking about all the ways I could leave and go home while walking around for hours on end, while trying not to get knocked over or hit by a car. I was wondering if I should buy a plane ticket and tell mom and dad, “Bye and see ya at home!” But, I figured I wouldn’t get very far with that idea. I was thinking about buying a car with the money I saved up and then I realized all the cars for sale around here were not what I was looking for. They were way more expensive than the car I wanted to get in Minnesota. Then I scratched that idea off the list. While I was thinking about all this stuff to try to go home, I was actually still interested in the places we were going. I just didn’t like the amount of people that were there.
I have a brother in the marines named Sgt. Drake Douglas, and I think that was what made my summer one to remember. Anyways, he made a surprise visit from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He came to the hotel and I had the weirdest feeling that the reason mom, dad, and I came to D.C. is because they set this up to be a surprise for me. Sure enough we went bowling and they told me that this was all a plan that they had been making for a couple of months. Then I calmed down and we had a good time for the rest of the night.
Drake took dad and I for a surprise drive and we went to a huge indoor paintball arena. Twenty bucks could get the three of us unlimited paintballs and air. We spent the whole day there and came out covered in bruises and paint. Lets just say that we had a really good time. We all knew that the time would come that Drake had to get back to base and dad, mom, and I had to get home before school started. We went our separate ways and said our goodbyes.
