It’s 5 minutes until the bell rings, and I can’t wait to go and take my new car for a ride. It’s a 72 chevelle ss. I got it for a steal at a used car dealership. The guy I got it from said it had a few problems he wasn’t very specific about what though.

Finally the bell rings! I put my stuff in my locker. I wasn’t to worried about homework I just left it all I could think about was taking my new car for a ride. The first place I went was the gravels so I could have some fun and not get pulled over. I waited till I found the longest straight road, then I slammed on the pedal in the rear view mirror you could see gravel flying in the air. I got it up to about 90 mph then the engine sounded like a gun was going off. I knew that the price was to good for it to have no problems.

I took it easy the whole way home. I pulled in the drive way. And I saw my dad ready to chew me out. He asked why I was out so late. I told him I went for a drive and the engine started to make noises. The bad thing was I had no idea what it was no one thought me how to fix cars. I went straight to bed I didn’t feel like eating that night. But it took me about an hour to get to sleep. I couldn’t stop worrying If there was something wrong with my car.

The next day I took the bus just in case the car broke down on me. The second I got to school I see my friend Mike. I hear “Hey Josh why didn’t you ride that piece of junk to school.” I tell him it’s not a piece of junk it’s just old. Mike: “Whatever but still, why didn’t you take it”

Me: “because there is something wrong with the engine, my dad said he would take it to the mechanic”

During 1st period Dave walks up to me and asks me if I wanted to race him. Dave is this rich jerk that thinks he’s better than everyone else, and his parents got him a Camaro for his birthday. He waits for me to respond I think for a second then he speaks “What’s wrong josh are you chicken.” That’s what really ticked me off so I tell him I will race. He says next Saturday on the gravels, and being me I say ok. Later on that day Mike finds out I’m going to race Dave

Mike: “So I hear your going to race Dave with that piece of junk”

Me: “Yes I am will you stop giving me a hard time about it”

Mike: “Calm down but you need to get that car of yours fixed fast, and maybe ask them if they can add a few extras to give you the upper hand”

Then that reminds me my car is at the mechanic getting fixed. After school I ride the bus home and walk down to the mechanic. I asked him what was wrong with the car and how long it was going to take to fix it. He tells me the spark plugs are old and need to be replaced, and he needs to replace the coolant. Then he tells me it should be done by next Thursday.

The next week flies by fast. And by Thursday the car is done I pick it up and take it to school Mike tells me that I better be ready the race is only in two days. I Tell him I know and that I got the car completely fixed so it should be ready. Mike: “ It better be because if its not you have no chance” I know I say now stop bugging me about it it’s stressing me out.

The next day Dave tells me I better be ready because tomorrow morning is the race. I tell him he’s going to eat my dust. He says “Yeah right we’ll see about that” That night I could barely get any sleep because all I could think about was the next morning. At about 12:00 P.M. I get to sleep, and I wake up at eight. I Sneak out of the house and drive to the spot Dave told me to go.

I wait a couple of minutes and he arrives he tells me if im ready I say Yeah. He tells me on your go. So I slam the pedal the wheels spin out and I take off Dave takes off right after I do. It was stupid of him to give me a head start I’m already way ahead of him.

Then I gasped there was an old wooden bridge up ahead it looked like it was about to break. I slammed on the breaks as fast as I could I stopped for a second but then Dave couldn’t stop fast enough and he rammed me on to the bridge. I could hear the bridge cracking I tried to stay as steady as possible, and then it broke I was going head first in the water.

It was happening so fast but it felt so slow. Only a few seconds later the car was almost completely submerged in water. The car started to fill up with water. I couldn’t open the door because of the pressure. The water was up to my chest now. Then I remembered there was a toolbox under the passenger seat so I took a deep breath and ducked under the water.

I Got it! It opened it and found a wrench I took it out and hit the window as hard as I could. The window broke and I swam out and up to the surface. Of the river when I got up I was gasping for air. I saw Dave terrified he was relieved to see me for once in his life. He drove me home And the first thing I did was tell my Parents, They were just glad to know that I got out alive.
