Gene Pool

            What would happen if you could pick your own genes?  I’m not talking about jeans, but your genetics.  Would you pick tall, short, brown hair, or green eyes?

            In the future millions of years from now technology has become so advanced that every human being has the chance to pick his or her own genes.  The person chooses their genes on their sixteenth birthday.  The sixteen year-olds place their thumb on a scanner, which reads their inner most thoughts.  The computer deciphers that person’s ideal human being and they are transformed.  Some people still choose to go through lists and choose their characteristic the old fashioned way, but this rarely happens.  Everyone becomes the most beautiful person his or her mind can create.

            “Talia and Tanya, will you please hurry up!” my mother cried up the stairs.  Tanya and I are identical twins and today is our sixteenth birthday.  Today our lives will change forever.  Tanya and I are both 5’10” tall, weigh 145 pounds, have straight auburn hair, and green eyes.  After today we will no longer be identical because today we take the gene test.  Today we decide what we physically look like for the rest of our lives.

            “Talia, what do you think you will look like tonight at our party?” Tanya yelled as she put on makeup in our split bedroom.

            “I don’t know.  I really haven’t thought about it.”  I responded.

            “Well, I was thinking maybe keeping my red hair, but changing my eye color,” Tanya pondered.

            “Are you girls ready to begin your new life?” my mother asked as she snuck into our room.  My mom had chosen to have jet-black hair, blue eyes, and to be 6’ tall.  Tanya and I loaded into our hover car and rode to the Genetic Pool as they called it.  It was a huge blue building, with numerous round tinted windows, and a wave design carved into the side.

            Tanya and I were transported inside immediately.

            “Hello, Tanya Tisha and Talia Tifara Talani and welcome to the Genetic Pool. This is where dreams come true!” a loud voice boomed over the intercom.

            “We don’t have middle names do we?”  I asked Tanya.

            “Yes, they come from your aura and what you will pick today.  Your name with change to the middle name I just gave you.  Nobody, not even you will remember that you were once called something else. ” The voice answered sweetly.

            Then, my identical sister and I were separated.  The room was completely black and filled with quiet beeping noises of computers.  A voice in my head commanded, “Press your thumb on the small green pad before you.”  I saw a pad that I hadn’t noticed before in front of me and pressed my thumb on it.   My head began to throb and my world was spinning.  Then, all went blank.  When I awoke I was looked up and saw myself in the mirror.  I hadn’t changed?  To my surprise I saw Tanya across the room and she looked exactly the same also.  What happened?

            “Empress Tisha and Tifara, you are the next to take the thrown.  Legend says two sets of identical twins will come to the Gene Pool on the same day and their looks will not change.  These set of twins are to be paired up and will take over the empire,” a voice boomed over the loud speaker.

            “Who are the other twins?” Tisha (Tanya) asked.

            “Tisha your husband will be Tacari and Tifara you will be paired with Taffia,” the voice announced.  Then, two men walked into the room both 6 feet tall with curly black hair, sapphire colored eyes, and tanned skin.

            “Welcome to your kingdom,” they chanted in unison.
