License

I wake up the morning of my sixteenth birthday,

excited and ready,

Mom picks me up,

to go to the courthouse,

where I sign and

am photographed.

Excited and fearless,

feeling grown up and nervous.

We arrive home to see my little green cavalier,

warming breeze of spring all around me.

I can now drive on my own,

I’m ready for anything.

I start my car,

excitedly grip the wheel,

 to begin my drive.

This was the moment,

 I first realized,

 I can drive where I want…

alone.
