Getting to know financial aid

By: Suzanne J

It’s that time of year again where seniors are thinking about college choices. One part of the college decision process that seniors should know before taking off is financial aid. Not a whole lot of seniors are aware of what financial aid entails, but luckily there is a meeting to help them better understand what it is.

The financial aid meeting is important because it helps to better understand how to find and apply for financial aid for college. The meeting isn’t just for seniors, however; juniors are welcome to participate too if interested. Mrs. Luzum will be hosting this years meeting with answers from the ICAN (Iowa College Access Network). Students attending this meeting will get a chance to learn about the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), important deadlines, overviews of the financial aid process, types of financial assistance available, scholarships and scams, and helpful tips. This meeting will be held Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 in Mrs. Hinton’s room at 6:30 p.m.

The financial aid meeting is a great event to participate in because soon students will be off on their own, and without this meeting, they won’t know enough information about what to expect from financial aid, and to recognize possible scams that they might come across. It is highly recommended that, seniors especially, attend this meeting so they can feel more comfortable about what to expect from financial aid.
