Valley Goes 3-D

By Brooke W

Valley High School will be introducing a new program this year titled Virtual Reality.  In this class, taught by Mr. Kent Bonte, students will be able to advance their technology skills and gain experience with three dimensional (3-D) programs.  This class will use 21st century levels of technology.  Students will also be using programs that will teach them to work with animation, gaming, and engineering.  The students will be creating work in    2-D and 3-D imaging, then transferring the images so the viewer becomes part of the project.

East Marshal School was one of the first of seven other schools to become involved with the virtual reality program.  Mr. Williams, Mrs. Molumby, and a few students had the chance to tour East Marshal High School this summer to see what the virtual reality program was all about.  The administration knew they wanted a project based program, that would be more hands-on.  Studies show that many students are actually able to learn better with hands-on projects rather than just listening to lectures and taking notes.

This 3-D system was donated from Iowa State University with and agreement that Valley participate in the National Secondary Education Math and Science K-12 grant.  As of right now, there are four students taking this pilot class: Tyler Schori, Jacob Molumby, Peter Carlson, and Ben Hemesath.  Mr. Williams says that they are hopeful to have more students involved next semester once they have more knowledge about the program.
