Valley drill team travels to state

By Kenna L

On Dec. 5, 2009 the Valley drill team members will to travel to Des Moines to participate in the Iowa State Drill Team competition for the 2009-2010 school year. The team has been practicing and improving to make the two routines they are taking as perfect as possible.

The team will be performing a light routine where they will be combining the use of light sticks and light ropes with dance to the song “Odyssey.” The routine was choreographed by junior Erica Jacobsen and sophomore Morgan Thias. The routine will be performed at 11:30 a.m. on Dec.  5 in the Wells Fargo Arena of Des Moines. During this performance the auditorium’s lights are shut completely off and the team will dance in front of select judges using their lighting props.

Along with the light routine, the drill team will also be performing a hip-hop dance. This routine was choreographed by Sabrina Bemiss, the owner of Expressions in West Union. The routine is set to the songs “Sugar”, “Krazy”, “Church”, and “Boom Boom Pow”. This routine will be preformed at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, also in Wells Fargo in front of judges.

The team has fifteen members this year. Freshmen members are: Carly Liebe, Meghan Orr, Amy Dummermuth, Mallory Burrack, Ashlee Einck, Jacqueline Fettkether, and Koree Olson. Sophomores include: Morgan Thias, Amber Kurdelmeyer, Leah Gage, Mariah Martin, and Aleesa Guyer. The only junior is Erica Jacobsen, and the seniors are Kenna Liebe and Shantel Lehmann. This year’s coach/drill team sponsor is Amy Boehm.

The team is working hard in their current practices on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6:15 a.m. To better prepare for state, more practices will be added. The drill team would also appreciate your support in upcoming local performances during basketball games and the Variety Show as well as at state competition.
