Valley band members chosen for UIC Honor Band

By Joelle D

On Jan. 18, eleven members of the Valley High School band will be participating in the annual UIC Honor Band.  This year’s concert is being held at Turkey Valley.  The selected members are split into two bands: symphonic, with 75 members, and concert band, with 92 members. Along with Valley, 10 other schools in the conference are participating.  These schools attending are: Central, Clayton Ridge, Lansing Kee, MFL MarMac, North Fayette, South Winneshiek, Sumner- Fredericksburg, Turkey Valley, and West Central.

The day begins with the members leaving the school at 11:30 a.m.  From there they head to Turkey Valley and begin to prepare for auditions.  Each participant must audition for the first place chair.  The judges decide the final order for the concert.

After auditions, the bands split and rehearsal begins.  Each band rehearses for about an hour and then takes a break.  Band practice resumes after the break until supper.

At 7:30 p.m. the concert begins in the gym.  The concert band plays first with the symphonic band following.  Valley’s participants for Concert band are: Sara Reierson (flute), Sam Klann (French horn), Peter Carlson (trumpet), Angela Williams (flute), Megan Britt (saxophone), and Jacob Molumby (trumpet).  The members of the symphonic band are: Joelle Davis (flute), Becca Hemesath (clarinet), and Joe Strong (trombone).

The directors this year are Mr. Lane M. Powell and Mr. Leon Kuehner.  Mr. Powell has been teaching for 14 years and is in his 5th year as director of bands for Fillmore Central Schools in Harmony and Preston, MN.  His bands have received high honors in marching band, concert band, jazz band, and small ensembles. They also have earned many regional and national awards. Mr. Keuhner has been a music educator for the past 34 years.  He has recently retired as the band director at Hampton-Dumont High School in Hampton, Iowa.  His bands have been selected to perform at the Iowa Bandmaster Association Conference six times and he was named Outstanding Music Educator for the state of Iowa in 2001.

This year’s UIC Honor Band has consisted of a lot of hard work and dedication from all who are involved.  This year is sure to be a success.
