Valley Junior High Band hosts concert for 4th graders

By Joelle D

This year, Mrs. Brackett, the junior high and high school band director, had the idea to host a preview concert for the fourth graders.  Last Tuesday, during the junior high band’s regular rehearsal time, the fourth graders joined the 7th and 8th graders in the band room.  The objective of this concert was to give the fourth graders a view of what band is like, and to get them excited for next year when they are given the opportunity to join the fifth grade band.

The concert began with the band warming up and playing a song as a group.  The middle portion of the concert consisted of sectionals.  Each section demonstrated their instruments by playing a short selection of their choice.  The concert came to an end with the band playing a closing piece.

Elizabeth Goddard, a member of Mrs. Lau’s 4th grade class shared her thoughts about the concert, “ I had a lot of fun listening to the older kids play for us and it was really cool.”  The instruments that she enjoyed the most were the clarinet and trumpet.  She plans to join the band next year and play one of these instruments.

This concert hopefully gave the rest of Elizabeth’s fourth grade peers an understanding of what band entails, and sparked an interest in them to join next year as well.
