US History:  Reforming American Society

Write a 2-3 page essay that compares the writers of the Transcendentalist movement (1850s) and the songwriters/performers of the 1960s.  Drawing upon specific passages as evidence, identify similarities and differences between the two reform movements.

  • Papers should be typed and double spaced.

  • Times New Roman 12 or comparable.

  • MLA

  • A “Works Cited” page is required (Writer’s INC. p 185)

  • Include a copy of the song lyrics in an appendix.

Outline for the paper.

I.  Introduce the time period/historical context of the paper (When, where, who?).  Conclude this section with a hypothesis that you will prove (A secondary source can be used here).

II. Review the literature.  Give a brief overview of the documents you will use to prove your thesis (Primary documents only).

III. Analysis.  Make statements about your hypothesis using quotations and argument as evidence.
