Teacher Feature

By: Megan B

As the new year started, the students at Valley found teachers teaching new subjects.  Mrs. Shirleen Reinhardt and Mrs. Lezley Johansen are two of those teachers that are teaching new subjects this year. Mrs. Reinhardt teaches seventh grade language arts and reading. She also teaches literature lessons with the preschool through the sixth grade throughout the six-day cycle in her role as elementary librarian. Mrs. Johansen is the high media specialist and she teaches SSR and junior high technology.

Shirleen Larson Reinhardt was born in West Union, Iowa on Oct. 22, 1958.  Mrs. Reinhardt has two sisters and she also had a brother who passed away in 1997.  Mrs. Reinhardt went to high school at Postville. While in high school she participated in 4H, FHA, softball, band, speech, drama, thespians, cheerleading and Future Teachers. After high school Mrs. Reinhardt attended the University of Northern Iowa. She is married to Michael Reinhardt. They have a daughter Josie, who is currently attending the University of Nothern Iowa, and a son, Jesse, who lives with his wife, Jen, in Des Moines with their two dogs Jack and Harley. In Mrs. Reinhardt’s free time she enjoys gardening, food preservation, reading, car cruises, walking, and she is a “wannabe” quilter.  She enjoys any movie that has Meryl Streep in it. Her favorite music is country and rock. Mrs. Reinhardt has “the best dog in the world” Oreo and three cats Woody, Peaches, and Fuzzball. Mrs. Reinhardt has been teaching for 27 years. She has taught at Valley for 20 of those years, and before Valley she taught in Malvern, IA and at Startmont. Mrs. Reinhardt decided to teach at Valley because she always wanted to return to Northeast Iowa. She feels that this area makes her feel right at home since her mother grew up here and her father is only five miles away from her current home. Her family is very important to her and she feels that Valley is a very family friendly school district. Mrs. Reinhardt enjoys the people she works with and the professionalism is evident at Valley. Overall she believes Valley is a fun place to be!

Lezley Johansen was born March 1969. Mrs. Johansen has two sisters. Mrs. J graduated from North Fayette in 1987. In high school she was a football cheerleader and she participated in chorus. Mrs. Johansen graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1991. With her husband Mrs. Johansen has two children. She has three dogs, three ponies, one house cat, and multiple farm cats. Mrs. Johansen enjoys reading, camping and multimedia stuff. Her favorite movie is “Love Actually” and she enjoys folk music. Mrs. Johansen has taught at Valley for eight years; three years as an English teacher and five years as a teacher-librarian. She works in the library because she enjoys reading but as her worked continued she realized that the library can be a junction for all content areas. Mrs. Johansen chose to teach at Valley because it was a job she could get close to home and after working at Valley for some years Mrs. Johansen has come to appreciate the setting of the K-12 building and the people at Valley are very nice!

Mrs. Reinhardt and Mrs. Johansen fully enjoy sharing the joy of reading and the students at Valley are extremely grateful to have them in the library department. They are the best resources in the library department. The Valley Library and classrooms wouldn’t be the same without them!
