Teacher Feature

By Chelsi B

The focus for this week’s teacher feature is on the high school social studies program.  The two men that head this department are Matt Krambeer and Kent Bonte.

Mr. Matt Krambeer was born on July 30, 1969 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.  Matt and his siblings (four brothers and one sister) were all raised in the MFL School District.  While in high school, Matt played football, basketball, and baseball.  He then furthered his education at Ellsworth College, the University of Iowa, and Upper Iowa.  He currently resides in Wadena with his wife Jeannie, six-year-old daughter Keely, and black lab named Rookie.  In his free time, Matt enjoys golfing, fishing, traveling, and keeping current on sports and news.  Mr. Krambeer has many favorite movies and he classifies his favorite music as rock.  Of the seventeen years that Mr. Krambeer has been teaching, eleven of them have been at Valley.  He chose to teach social studies because of the wide array of subjects that it allowed him to teach.  He finds that social studies is interesting in the fact that people can learn a great deal about themselves and gain a better understanding of the world around them.  Matt is appreciative of his role at Valley because he finds it to be a top notch school with great students and staff.

Mr. Kent Bonte was born in Rockford, Illinois.  He has one older brother who is currently an electrical engineer and one younger sister who is an elementary teacher in Colorado.  Kent graduated from Oregon High School in Oregon, Illinois in 1969 where he participated in football, basketball, track, cross country, chorus, drama, and student council.  After high school, Mr. Bonte achieved his undergraduate studies at Central College in Pella, Iowa.  His post graduate studies were completed at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.  Kent currently resides in the Valley School District with his wife Karen, who is a teacher at North Fayette, and a Gordon setter named Fletcher.  They raised two sons; Seth, who lives in Madison with his family, and Anson, who teaches science at Des Moines East High School.  In his free time, Kent enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, and homesteading.  He likes watching classic movies and enjoys listening to a wide variety of music.  Mr. Bonte has been involved in education for over thirty years, but has been teaching at Valley since 1985.  Kent and Karen came to the school district because they enjoyed the area and were pleased with the community members.  Mr. Bonte, who currently teaches various social studies classes, chose to teach this subject because of the “lessons of history.”

Valley’s social studies curriculum is very diverse and well-structured which is largely credited to the work and commitment of both Mr. Krambeer and Mr. Bonte.
