Staying Healthy in the Winter Season

By Kenna L

During the winter season, there are many ways to get sick. Although most know the few easy steps to help prevent sickness, a little reminder is always a good idea.

With new sicknesses like H1N1 spreading across the country, most people can’t afford to get sick on account of work and school. With the harsh winter around the corner however, most people unfortunately are more likely to get sick. According to the Associated Content website, there are many steps to take to have a better chance at a healthy winter.  A common and simple step is to bundle up and stay warm. With dropping temperatures, it is easy to lose body heat. By wearing hats and dressing in layers, maintaining a steady body temperature can be effortless.

Perhaps the most well known of the steps is to wash, wash, wash. Washing the hands that come into contact with millions of germs a day can prevent the germs from spreading. Make sure to use warm water and wash for at least twenty seconds. Singing the ABC’s or Happy Birthday can help to wash for the full length of time. After washing, make sure to dry hands completely so they don’t get cold. Also, keep in mind that using hand sanitizers may help out, but cannot replace washing hands.

Exercising and eating properly can also help to keep the immune system on track, and the body healthy. Exercising four to six times a week keeps the body strong and in shape. It is also important that after sweating during a workout, a shower is taken as soon as possible to clean the skin. Eating fruits, vegetables, and soups boosts the immune system and prevents the body from becoming sick. One of the most important steps is to drink as much fluid as possible. Staying hydrated helps fight flu and cold germs.

Another minor step for staying healthy is to keep up on sleep and keep the body rested. Sleeping gives the body rest, and boosts the immune system. Also, avoid people who are sick. This may be common sense, but germs are easily spread through coughing and sneezing. Finally, keep areas clean. Cleaning can kill germs and prevent you from being sick.

Hopefully, during this winter season there is a minimum amount of sicknesses here in the Valley Community. Follow these simple steps, and at least give yourself a chance at a healthy winter!
