Queen Christina-Queen of Sweden

1626-1689

Christina was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of King Gustavus II Adolphus and Maria Eleonora. Because her father died in battle when she was a young girl, Christina became the queen-elect at age six. Until she was 8, Sweden was governed by a council of 5 regents. At 14, she was allowed in to council meetings. In 1644, when she was 18 years old, Christina was crowned Queen of Sweden. Because she was committed to educating herself, Christina regularly got up at five in the morning to read. She also invited writers, musicians, and scholars to come to teach and entertain her. The famous philosopher and mathematician Rene Descartes taught Christina philosophy. During her reign, the first Swedish newspaper was started and a law requiring school for Swedish children was passed. Though one of Sweden's leaders opposed her, she helped end Thirty Years War by promoting a peaces plan. In 1654, Christina abdicated her throne because of her conversion to Catholicism, which was illegal in Sweden. To succeed her, Christina chose her cousin Charles X Gustav. The day he was crowned king, she left Sweden. Christina went to Rome, where she would become the friend of four Roman Catholic popes. In Rome, she lived in a palace that became a meeting palace fo a variety of scholars and musicians. She used the money she received from her land in Sweden to collect a variety paintings, sculptures, and books. he started the Accademia dell' Arcadia, an academy for philosophy and literature which still exists in Rome today. Because of her leadership, the first public opera house opened in Rome. She also gave money to charities and worked to protect the rights of Jews in Rome. Her large collection of books is presently in the Vatican library. Christina's tomb is in St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome.
