Pre-Employment class learns by example

By: Suzanne J

Pre-employment strategies is a class that students can take to learn about the work place. This class is a Northeast Iowa Community College course designed to teach people skills, integrate employees, and teach technical skills. One class cannot cover the entire work place enviorment and expect students to know about multiple work forces, however, which is why some students got the opportunity last week to hear from several speakers about their work experience.

On Wed., Nov. 11, three different speakers: Lon Britt from Elgin State Bank, Joyce Fredrick from Palmer Lutheran Hospital, and Kent Appler from Northeast Iowa Coop came to speak to the students. Their main purpose for speaking to the class was to share an employer’s perspective on workplace issues and give advice to the students in selecting their colleges and careers. These speakers were very helpful for the students as they gained knowledge of what to expect for future careers. Students agree that having speakers was a great experience because they didn’t learn just about the work force, but also how to prepare for job interviews. They also say that having different speakers from different work places helped students to learn about  the similarities and differences between jobs.

The students gained helpful advice from the experts, and learned valuable insights from different professions. Through the class and the speakers, students are now more aware of careers and college opportunities. Hopefully, next year more students will sign up for this great opportunity to earn a college credit and learn how to look at careers and college opportunities.
