George Washington: Farmer, General & First U.S. President

1732-1799

Washington was born on a Virginia farm on February 11, 1732. As a boy he was excellent in mathematics. When he was 11, his father died and at the age of 15, Washington became a land surveyor. After his older brother died in 1752, he inherited the large home and farm in Mount Vernon, Virginia.

Washington did not want to go to college but wanted practical knowledge instead. He grew tobacco and wheat and built a fishery. In 1753, because he had experience as a surveyor, he was sent by Virginia's governor to tell the French that the British claimed the land on the Allegheny River.

Later, Washington served in Virginia's government, where he opposed the Stamp Act and supported a boycott of British products. In 1775, Washington was unanimously elected to be the Commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. He became an able and respected leader during the Revolutionary War. After the war, he was elected the first president of the United States. While he was president of the United States.  While he was president, Washington protected the United States from British and Spanish expansion in North America.

Though he owned slaves, Washington occasionally spoke out against the institution of slavery. In 1795, he was falsely accused of writing forged letters which questioned his loyalty during the Revolution. He left office in 1796 at the end of his second term. Washington caught a cold and died on December 14, 1799. He showed exemplary service in the military, business, and government.
