Fifth graders learn to survive

By Chelsi B

Last month, Mrs. Reierson’s fifth grade class had the opportunity to put their survival skills to the test when they were placed in the wilderness at Gilbertson Nature Center.  After a week of training and with limited supplies, the students gained knowledge about the skills and techniques that they may need if such an event actually occurred.  After the trip, Mrs. Reierson asked the students to write brief articles about the experience.

The following passage, “Surviving the 2010 Winter,” was written by Jade Daughton and Skyler Luzum.

The Valley fifth grade class got to go on a winter survival trip on Friday, February 12, 2010 at the Gilbertson Nature Center in Elgin.  The Valley fifth grade got to go on this trip to see what it is like to get trapped in the winter woods.  The fifth grade got to build a fire and shelter, while their parents got to go along to observe their skills.

This situation had them build a fire with the materials of 0000-superfine steel wool, dryer lint, and a 9-volt battery.  Also using tinder, kindling, small firewood, and large firewood.  This firewood helped them have the fire going all day.

The shelter materials they used were tree branches, tall sticks, and bark. They used the bark for windproofing and waterproofing.  The shelter had to fit everyone in their group comfortably.  It had to be low to the              ground in order for the air to stay low and keep them warm.

The students also had to bring a survivial pack in order to the survive the winter cold.

The kids from Valley felt like surviving in the winter was easy for one day.  Rylee, one of the students from the class said, “Yes, it was easy.”  Also, Nic from the fifth grade said it was easy.

The fifth graders learned a lot from this event and are very fortunate for the experience and the hands-on activity.
