FFA keeps busy

By: Brooke W

The Valley FFA Chapter along with Tri-star, Ed-CO and Starmont FFA gave students an opportunity to learn about judging animals.  They hosted the Clayton County livestock-judging contest for students in seventh-twelfth grades on Sept. 30 at the Clayton County Fair Grounds.  The students were able to judge two classes each of  beef, sheep, goats and swine.  The teams were split up by grades.  Students from 10 school districts participated in the event.

The ninth grade team members from Valley including Janice Frieden, Nick Boehm, Trevor Worth, and Katrina Franzen placed 5th overall.  Tenth grade team members Page Kuene, Spencer Spain, Cassie Wettleson, and Sami Lee placed 10th overall.  Janice Frieden placed 5th as an individual overall and Nick Boehm placed 7th as an individual overall.  In the sheep classes Trevor Worth placed 4th, and in the swine classes Nick Boehm placed 4th.  The freshman team placed 3rd in beef, 3rd in sheep, and 3rd in swine.  Sami Lee placed 4th in beef, and 4th in goats.  The tenth grade team placed 2nd in beef and 5th in sheep.

The FFA students are also beginning their annual fruit sales are here again.  This year the Valley FFA chapter members will be selling fruit, Edgewood locker meats, and Calhoon Creamery cheese. In addition to this, the students that are going to the national FFA convention will be selling soy candles.  Sales began on Oct. 9 and will be ending on Oct. 28.  The money that the students raise helps the students to attend trips like the National FFA convention, take group field trips in the area, and pay for things like chapter dues and their FFA jackets.  If you are interested in purchasing any of these items, please contact the FFA advisor, Monica Enyart, at the school (563-426-5551) or e-mail her at enyart_monica@valley.k12.ia.us.
