Anne Frank Young Girl Caught in World War II

1929-1945

Anne Frank was a Jewish girl who grew up in Frankfurt, Germany, the daughter of a businessman. During the reign of Adolph Hitler, her family moved out of Germany to Amsterdam, Holland. However, in 1941, German forces invaded Holland. Soon, Jews were being mistreated and Anne, along with all Jewish children, was forced to go to a special Jewish school instead of a public school.

On July 9, 1942, the Frank family, after being told that they had to leave Holland to go to a concentration camp, went into hiding with four other Jews in the back office and warehouse of Mr. Frank's business.Non-Jewish friends smuggled in food and other supplies for the hiding families. During this time, Anne kept a diary which chronicled her experiences of living in hiding. Her diary is a unique record of a young girl growing up in the midst of war and severe anti-semitism.

The Franks lived together in confined quarters until August 4, 1944 when the German Gestapo discovered them. The Frank family was then transported to the concentration camp at Auschwitz in Poland, where Anne's mother died in 1945. Anne and her sister were eventually brought to another camp called Bergen-Belsen, where they both died of typhus two months before Holland was freed by the Allied troops. Mr. Frank was found alive in the hospital at Auschwitz when it was liberated by Russian troops. Anne's diary was found on the floor of the room where her family hid for two years. Her diary has been translated into more than 30 languages and has been read by millions of people. One entry shows Frank's remarkably positive atitude in the midst of a terrible situation: "In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart."
