Bradstreet was born Anne Dudley in Northampton, England. She was from a wealthy Puritan family and her father worked for the Earl of Lincoln. When she was 16 years old, she married Simon Bradstreet, and in 1630 they sailed to the Massachusetts Bay Colony with her parents and other puritan settlers.

In New England, the Bradstreet moved often, finally settling in Andover, massachusetts. While serving as a hostess and raising eight children, Bradstreet wrote poems, many of which were written for her family expressed her family and expressed her deeply held Puritan beliefs. Without her knowledge, Bradstreet's brother-in-law took her poems to England where they were published as The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America in 1650. This book was later published in America in 1678. Two of the poem's in the book, "Of the Vanity of All Worldly Creatures" and "David's Lamentation for Saul and Jonathan," are uniquely different from the English verse in the American colonies. Many of her poems express her reflections about such topics a childbirth, the death of a grandchild, and stories from the Bible. Her sequence of religious poems, mid-1800's. these poems finally received critical acclaim in the 20 Th. century.  She also wrote prose, including Meditations, which is a collection of  short, wise sayings. In recent times, the poet John Berryman wrote a tribute to her in his poem "Homage to Mistress Bradstreet," which contains many phrases from her writings.
