Albert Einstein- German-Jewish Physicist

1879-1955

Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany but his family eventually moved to Munich. As a boy, Einstein did not enjoy formal schooling. Consequently, his uncle taught him algebra at home and Einstein spent much of his time solving mathematical and geometrical problems. When he was 14, he became interested in theoretical physics. At age 16, he applied to the Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, Switzerland. He passes his entrance exam in 1896 on him second attempt.

As a student, he often failed to attend lectures and instead chose to work on his own, reading books on theoretical physics. In 1905, at age 26, Einstein published four important scientific papers. In 1909, he was hired as professor at the University of Zurich. Later he moved to Berlin, Germany, where he devoted himself to research. Einstein's theories included the relationship between mas and energy, the unique characteristics of atoms, and the structure of the universe. During World War I, Einstein strongly opposed the war and became a pacifist. After the war, Einstein lectured in theoretical physics throughout Europe and the United States. In January 1933, he was in California when Hitler came to power in Germany. As a Jew, he would certainly be a target for Nazi anti-semitism back in Germany. Consequently, Einstein was appointed a permanent position at a Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1941, he became a U.S. citizen.

After World War II Einstein worked to promote international agreements to control nuclear weapons. He was known as a simple man who played violen and enjoyed sailing. Einstein is seen as the main founder of the twentieth century theoretical physics.
