A different way to celebrate “Going Green”.

By: Kenzie N

What holiday comes to mind when you think of shamrocks, leprechauns, and lots and lots of green? Saint Patrick’s Day, of course! This traditional holiday founded in Ireland is celebrated all over the world. But, do you ever wonder why the holiday grew to be so popular in other countries? The United States is the country that celebrates the holiday most, other than Ireland. Something about green and pinching excites Americans, Irish and non-Irish alike, to get together and celebrate this popular holiday. But why do so many Americans get so eager to celebrate this traditional Irish holiday?

One of the main reasons Americans love to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day is because it is fun and different. It is not like any other holiday we traditionally celebrate in our country. It does not involve gift giving, or confessing your love towards someone. It involves wearing green and having a good time. It is the only day when people can run around and pinch their colleagues without any consequences. Who would not want to celebrate that?

It also gives people the chance to show off every single article of green clothing they possess. Whether it is a shirt, sweater, pants, underwear, jewelry, even hair dye, people find it necessary to break out of their house completely decked out from head to toe in green. And do you know what the best part about that is? Not one person can make fun of them! On this 17th day of March, anyone can dress like a lunatic and won’t be ridiculed for it. Even leprechauns start to come out the woodwork. Don’t be surprised if you walk into your workplace and see a human shamrock, pot of gold, or leprechaun sitting at the cubicle across from you. It is perfectly normal. May celebrate because of pride in their Irish heritage, but others celebrate because it is just a good excuse for having fun towards the end of a long winter.

Saint Patrick’s Day may not have started as a traditional American holiday, but it has developed into one over the years. So, this Saint Patrick’s Day, try to let loose and have some fun with the day. Saint Patrick’s Day is not just for the leprechaun loving Americans with a strong Irish heritage. It is for anyone who is looking to put some fun into their everyday, monotonous lives, and bring new meaning to the phrase “Go Green”.
